Limerick Community Games 2010 – will it be one to remember in years to come? That is a question i’ve pondered over recently, as the much anticipated second and third weekends of the National Finals draw closer. It’s been such a busy year, there hasn’t been much time to sit down and have a look back. It all got under way on the 18th October with the Annual General Meeting and now what seems like only a few weeks later, some of us find ourselves deep in preparation for another trip to Athlone Institute of Technology.
It’s been a great year so far and one thing that has been clear from the beginning is the huge participation levels. These levels have reached all time highs over the past number of years and the 2009-2010 year was no exception. This year saw 1,000 young people take to the stage over 6 nights in both the U/14 and U/10 talent competitions. 610 young people brought out their artistic sides with the Art Competition and huge crowds turned out for one of the highlights on the Community Games calendar, the county Athletics Finals in Mungret. The success was not only at county level however, the experience and strength of the Limerick sides were clear to be seen at the Munster Finals for both the indoor and outdoor games. By taking a glimpse at the numbers that qualified from the recent Munster Finals Limerick have thirteen teams who qualified for Athlone, a more than substantial number I think you will agree.
This success must be coming from somewhere. Obviously competitors are extremely fit, dedicated to their sport and if it applies focused on team work but then again all the teams from other counties don’t appear to be much different. In my opinion, the vast level of competition in Limerick, the A and B competitions give competitors experience and developing the young peoples’ skills at a younger age appears to be giving everybody a huge amount of success, regardless of the result at the end of the match/ competition. The Community Games spirit where the focus is on participation can be seen all around Limerick and this must be what makes us stand out from the rest. Young people love having fun and playing games with their friends and Community Games facilitates this in a big way. Sometimes I think we have a lot to learn from the competitiors! Sportsmanship, friendly rivalry and the ability to have fun are free flowing in these young people and it is fantastic!
For those who have finished with Community Games for 2010 well done! Your effort was terrific, everyone did so well. For those whose journey continues for the coming weeks, best of Luck. Regardless of how you get on at the National Finals you have been excellent to date, keep up the training and enjoy your weekend! Also to the managers, mams & dads, Brothers & sisters and whoever else is involved, you’re doing great!"Victory isn't defined by wins or losses. It is defined by effort. If you can truthfully say, 'I did the best I could, I gave everything I had,' then you're a winner."

This weekend an estimated 3,000 young people will take part in various track and field events starting Thursday evening. This weekend is one of the most exiting on the Limerick Community Games calendar as we will see children as young as three and four taking the track right up to the ages of 15 and 16. Newcastle west will be carrying the torch to light the flame and Feenagh/ Kilmeedy and Rathkeale will be reading the Community Games pledge. Hopefully the fine weather continues for the weekend. Remember to have lots of fun and go n-eirí an t-adh libh!

Limerick Community Games
By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.Friday
All the resident competitors have arrived safely in Athlone and are settling into their accommodation. The excitement and high expectations of the weekend can be seen clearly all around the campus. All the officials and volunteers have been working around the clock to ensure the weekend runs smoothly when everything kicks off tomorrow morning.
At 6:30pm, all counties assembled in the AIT campus for the opening ceremony. Our own Anthony Fitzsimons was announcer for the evening and did a terrific job as always. Michael Curley, President of Community Games addressed the crowd and special guests such as Mary O’Rourke T.D. were in attendance. The Limerick competitors were filled with enthusiasm and many chants could be heard from them. Also the Army put on a show of four men parachuting out of a helicopter which turned out to be an impressive treat.
A busy day has been had by all, but it’s not over yet, the ever important disco must be attended tonight and there is a huge amount of anticipation for that. Tomorrow is going to be a big day for all 192 young people competing and we wish them the best of luck.2010-05-23
This week sees 192 young people from 28 areas around Limerick embark on the journey to Athlone Institute of Technology, where they will represent Limerick at the National Finals of Community Games. Masses of time, energy and commitment has been tunnelled toward this great weekend and regardless of results, it is hoped all of these young people will leave Athlone next Sunday content after doing their best in their particular event, having lots of new friends and oodles of memories which they can look back on with great sentiment. This year Limerick have its largest number to date competing at the May National Finals and to make this all happen, a huge amount of preparation has been done by Managers, parents and all those who made a contribution to the success of the competitors. Eleanor Fitzsimons and Mary Corby are the county Managers for the weekend and we would like to wish them all a fantastic and fun filled weekend.
For those not making the trip to Athlone, never fear! The website will be updated daily with the latest results and news. Also keep an eye on the local media where we hope to have regular updates.
For all those competing this weekend – Go n-eirí an t-adh libh!

Last week Oonagh Hayes, daughter of the late Gretta O’Connor presented Limerick Community Games with the Gretta O’Connor perpetual cup. Gretta served Community Games for many years, working tirelessly to enhance the enjoyment and delight young people experience from Community Games. Unfortunately, Gretta passed away a number of years ago and the Gretta O’Connor perpetual cup is just one of the ways this great woman is being honoured. This cup is now the coveted prize of the U13 Futsol competition.

Limerick Community Games
By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.Primary Schools Choir
Last Monday night seven primary school choirs from across Limerick city and county made their way to the Woodlands House Hotel where an evening of immense talent was about to be revealed. The pupils ranged between 3rd and 6th class and for a number of schools this was their first time entering the competition. Regardless of whether they brought home medals or not, each choir were fantastic representatives from their respective schools and all teachers and parents involved who were there in big numbers can be very proud.
Ballylanders N.S started off the night with “Mo Ghile Méar” and “When the Saints go Marching in” followed closely by Croagh N.S. who gave an African and Irish sounding twists to the competition with “Chiame”, “Tell Me Ma” and “Towngo”. After that St. Annes N.S., Rathkeale performed “Panis Angelicus”, “You are Mine” and “Hallelujah” before we heard “A Mhuire Mhathair” and “I have a Dream” from Athea N.S. Then Kilmallock N.S. gave us their versions of “No Matter What” and “Don’t Stop Believin” followed by Meekilla N.S. “Sneachta agus Sioc” and “Lead Me Lord”. Gaelscoil Chalaidh an Treoigh, Monaleen brought the evening to an end with “Cucaburra”, “Stand By Me” and “Ben”. From that line-up it was clear an entertaining evening was had by all.
The Judges had their work cut out for them with such a high standard among but the results are as follows:
1st= St. Anne’s N.S., Rathkeale
2nd = Athea N.S.
3rd = Croagh N.S.
4th = Kilmallock N.S.
Well done to everyone involved.Gymnastics

Note: Change of rule
Cycling Participants may take part in another individual athletic event.
Sat 26th, Sun 27th June 2010• Areas may enter 3 participants in each athletic event ie if you have an U10 100m Boys you may have 3 boys representing your area in this category.
• Each individual entered may only participate in one individual event + a relay.
• Areas the easiest and most successful way in finding your representatives to the county finals is by having a sports evening. This is no major task, a few adults, a few flags and cones a fixed date and time, and a note to your local schools and away you go.
• Children love to run, no expense, throw off the shoes and stockings and away you go, that the reason we in Limerick hold our county finals on grass. No special uniform, a tee-shirt and a pair of shorts and great fun for everybody.
• Allow a child to watch and you will please them for a moment. Allow a child participate and you will occupy them for a lifetime.
• Areas do make the effort and lets see us surpass our previous participation record of over 3000 competitors over the three days.2010-04-18

Website
Don’t forget to check us out at www.limerickcommunitygames.com
And also the new National Community games website was launched recently which can be found at www.communitygames.ie There is a huge amount of information available on this site and the following are some of many Healthy eating guidelines:
Healthy Eating Guidelines
Enjoy your food!
Eat a variety of different foods, using the food pyramid as a guide.
Eat the right amount of food to be a healthy weight, and exercise regularly. Foods with a lot of fibre fill you up quickly, so you’ll be less likely to want high-fat foods. This will help you be a healthy weight.
Eat 5 or more portions of fruit and vegetables every day. Try and get into the habit of having at least one portion of fruit juice, fruit or vegetable at every meal.
Eat more foods rich in starch– breads, cereals, potatoes, pasta and rice. Aim to have 6 servings a day.
Eat plenty of foods rich in fibre – breads and cereals (especially wholegrain) potatoes, pastas and rice; and fruit and vegetables.
Reduce the amount of fatty foods you eat, especially saturated fats. Make lower fat choices whenever possible. Grill, boil oven bake, or stir-fry in very little fat instead of deep-frying. Try eating fewer foods from the top of the food pyramid.
If you drink alcohol, keep within sensible limits. Preferably, drink with meals and try to make every second day an alcohol free day.
Use a variety of seasonings; try not to always rely on salt to flavour foods. Use herbs, spices and black pepper as alternatives.
If you drink or eat snacks containing sugar, limit the number of times you take them throughout the day. This is particularly important for children’s growing teeth.

By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.Ireland might be in the midst of a recession however there was no shortage of smiles or talent in the University of Limerick Arena last Saturday morning. Teams travelled from every corner of Munster to compete in the finals with their eyes focused on the top prize of qualifying to the National Finals in Athlone. Limerick Community Games
By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.Over the past number of weeks Limerick Community Games saw 1000 young people take to the stage to perform in this now infamous competition and it was clear from the opening acts right through to the finals last weekend that the standard of talent our city and county turned out would put any x factor or talent show on T.V. to shame. In Caherconlish Friday night the recitation competitors were well able to attract the attention of the crowd with tales of illness, going up into space, an alternative recipe for soup and “the touch of the master’s hand” to name but a few. The Drama/ Comedy sketch was equally as entertaining with Eoin, Ciarán, Jay, Alex, Richard and Robert winning out in the end with their version of “That was That” giving a look back at the year 2009. Well done boys! The solo music showed true skill from the competitors with a variety of instruments including a number of harps which was fantastic and to finish off the night the group music competition displayed beautiful versions of tunes such as “Young Maiden” “The Titanic Theme Song” and “John Clifford’s Jig”
The standard was equally as high in Askeaton on Saturday night with the finals of the solo singing, group singing, solo modern dance and Group Modern Dance. From these groups Amy Hoyne, Ballingarry/ Granagh A, Paul Roche and Croagh/ Kilfinny B will be worthy representatives of Limerick in Athlone.

The U/10 talent competition was equally impressive and it proves there is a bright future for talent in Limerick. This is only a county Competition at the moment but the experience for the young people involved could not be measured. One manager remarked that the look on the kids faces made all the preparation and time it took worth it and that is what Community Games is all about. Well done to everyone

Limerick Community Games
By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.
National AGM
On Friday the 26th February 2010 delegates, directors, committee members and observers descended on the Hodson Bay Hotel in Athlone, Co. Westmeath for the 39th Annual General Meeting of HSE Community Games. The elections, debates and decision making all took place over the weekend and it was clear from the outset that everyone was there for similar reasons wanting the best possible future for Community Games. With over 500,000 participants and 20,000 volunteers nationwide there was a lot to be discussed and sufficient time was given to each subject matter. Eleanor Fitzsimons, Dan McCarthy and Jason Bolger acted as Limerick delegates for the weekend and Anthony Fitzsimons as the Munster delegate all doing a fantastic job representing the county and province. The Board of Directors for 2010 are as follows:
President – Miceal Curley – Sligo
Deputy President – Mike Bourke – Cork
General Vice President – Carmel Grealy – Galway
Company Secretary – Maureen Quinlan – Dublin
General Treasurer – Michael O’Grady – Galway
Activities Director – Conal Duffy – Galway
PR and Marketing Director – Margaret Bolton – Sligo
Security Director – Clifford Kelly – Cavan
Youth Director – Kevin Doyle – Offaly
Director – John Drake – Down
Director – Peggy Connolly – Monaghan
Director – Tony Lee – Galway
Director – Seamus Lawlor – Wicklow
Director – Margaret Culloty – Kerry
Director – Margaret Carroll – Laois
Director – Pauline Martin O’Rourke – Tipperary
Director – Gerry Davenport – Donegal
Childrens Officer – Mary Leydon – Sligo
As well as that the Activities Committee were also elected Gary Wilmot, Gerry Hegarty & Jason Bolger all from Limerick are part of this.
The Media Awards also took place on Saturday afternoon and Limerick was greatly recognised in the following categories:
Special Award – Weekly Observer
Radio Award – West Limerick 102FM
P.R.O. Award – Agnes O’Dowd, Limerick Leader
Congratulations to all those concerned. It was fantastic to see such a huge Limerick representation.
On a personal level attending the AGM was an invaluable experience. It gave me the opportunity to check everything out, consult with P.R.O.’s of other counties and I hope to make use of the knowledge I have gained over the coming months.
To conclude, the Annual General Meeting for 2010 proved many things. Firstly it showed that the passion and commitment for this fantastic organisation is alive and well. Secondly the spirit and friendship is stronger than ever. Over the course of the weekend an Offaly woman said to me “You can’t put a price on friendship” which couldn’t be more true! This is what Community Games is all about – fun, friendly rivalry and the friendships that will continue long after the competitors have left the pitch, court or stage and long may this continue.U/14 Quiz - Results

Michael O’Halloran
Community GamesAlthough Michael has been nominated for his involvement in Caherdavin Community Games, he could also have been considered for soccer, scouting and his tireless work for the youth of the area. But then, this is only to be expected from the son of the ever active and legendary Joe O’Halloran, one of Limerick’s most respected Community Games workers. There is also a bit of history being made, as Joe was presented with this award in 1988.
Michael first became involved in soccer as an underage player in 1981 as a goalkeeper, going on to win many trophies with Caherdavin Celtic F.C. His managerial career began in 1989 and many successes were recorded by his various underage teams.
Michael thrives on work and is extremely efficient. He has been Club secretary for eight years, seldom if ever missing a meeting.
At Community Games he has managed a host of outdoor and indoor teams to county success, and is always available to help out at athletics events.
Michael has been leader of the Clonmacken pack since 1987 and has taken them to various unit county and national events, and has received a Merit Award for his scouting activities.
For 25 years he has been involved with the youth of Christ The King Parish, and the greater sporting Limerick Community. He is worthy recipient of this service to Sport Award. On behalf of Limerick Community Games I would like to Congratulate Michael and wish him every success in the future.
Youth committee news
By Denise Lyons, PRO
The first official meeting of the youth committee took place on Friday last in the UL sports bar. There was an excellent attendance of over 20 people proving just how enthusiastic the youth of Limerick are. On the instruction of Chairperson David McInerney, the meeting was based on being fun, inclusive and on helping us to get to know one another so we can function better as a team. There were lots of exciting new ideas mentioned suggesting that this will be our best year yet!!
After the meeting we went bowling, this proved to be great fun and is the first of many fun outings we hope to have this year. Make sure you look out for us at different community games events during the year; we are there to help and to make everything more enjoyable for you!If you have any queries feel free to contact me at aineoriordan@limerickcommunitygames.com. If it is a query relating to rules ect a copy of the rule book can be downloaded from www.communitygames.ie

Congratulations:
A piece of history was created recently as Michael O’Halloran from Caherdavin received a Sports Partnership Award. Michael has been an invaluable resource for Caherdavin Community Games down through the years and has also been greatly involved in his soccer club and the scouts. His award is highly significant as he is the second generation in his family to receive the award, something that has never happened before. His father Joe ‘The Kid’ who is well known in Limerick Community Games was presented with the award in 1988. Congratulations Michael!Dont forget CLOSING DATES:

The project titles selected for 2010 touch on areas that interest to us as an organisation and as a country. Each of them will also be of direct relevance to any individual participating in sport today.
Working on these projects will enable participants to explore and learn about important and relevant issues to them, gain new insights and perspectives and offer great scope for you to be creative.
Under 11 - Does sport encourage ‘fair play’ or ‘foul play’?
The participant is asked to consider the impact being involved in sport has for an individual. Is it a case of ‘winning at any cost’, including cheating to ‘the important thing is to have taken part and done your best.’ From self-regulating football matches where two teams agree to invisible lines and follow and enforce these unseen markings to Thierry Henry hand-passing the ball into the net live on television and the goal standing. Use examples to support your project.
Under 13 - What is substance use and abuse in sport?
The participant is asked to outline what is meant by use and abuse of ‘substances’ in sport. This could include the maintenance of a balanced healthy diet to the use of banned substances. It may be considered from the perspective of performance enhancing but also to deliberate debilitating an athlete’s ability to perform. It should also be remembered that medication, including for example Asthma inhalers, is covered under this title. Use examples to clearly support your project.
Under 16 - Does Sport unite or divide our community, country and world?
The participant is asked to look at the ‘power’ of sport at local, national or global level and demonstrate how it might be a positive or negative force. From hostility experienced at some football derbies to competitions designed to bring people together. Another approach might be to examine the levels of interest and involvement in sport by people in any place. Find examples to make your project demonstrate your case clearly.

Golden Vale Limerick Community Games
By Áine O’Riordan P.R.O.
Weather
Last weekend saw the cancellation of Community Games events right across County Limerick due to the extreme weather conditions. At some points the idea of adding snowboarding to the list of events next year must have crossed many minds but for now we must work on with the events we have and at the moment all events will run as normal next weekend. Regarding the teams that were due to compete last weekend they will be contacted in the coming days with details of the revised fixtures.Date Extensions
Due to the bad weather over the last few weeks it has been decided that the registration date for 3rd round draws will be pushed back a week from 13th January to the 20th January. This change in date effects
1. Badminton U/13 (County), U/15 Mixed
2. Table Tennis Boys U/13, U/16
3. Primary School Quiz – 2 teams per school
4. Quiz - U/14
5. Card Game 45 – Individual Event U/14 (County). Maximum from any one area is 6.
Area Affiliation
A reminder to all areas that they must be affiliated before any team competes in the events. It is advised that this is seen to before the end of January as leaving it any later could result with problems competing later in the year.
Talent
The talent competitions are quickly approaching and over the past number of years this particular event has been deemed tremendously successful. This competition gives areas the opportunity to showcase their vast numbers of exceptionally talented young people. Between singing, dancing, recitations and the new event set dancing, there is something for everyone to take part in and enjoy. Therefore I would encourage each area to get practicing! Also if there is a lot of interest in areas has an area competition been considered? Some areas have an evening locally and this also proves quite successful and helps the competitors develop some experience before they compete at county level.2010-01-09
PLEASE NOTE:
All events fixed for Saturday the 9th January 2010 have been cancelled due to the severe weather conditions.
All events in West Limerick are cancelled for Sunday 10th January 2010 BUT events may go ahead in East Limerick on this date. All teams will be notified.
All events will take place as fixed next weekend. A revised schedule for teams who were due to play this weekend will be announced early next week.
The Area Awards in Ballinasloe are cancelled
The Limerick Community Games Youth Committee meeting scheduled for Sunday 10th January at 6pm in U.L. has also been cancelled.
2010-01-04
Area Awards
The time has come around again for the Area Awards to take place in Ballinasloe which were prostponed before Christmas due to flooding. Therefore on the this Saturday the 9th January Lyn Nolan (Volunteer Recognition), Noelle Nicholson (Youth) and representatives from St. Senans (Area) will be making the trip to Galway to receive their well earned awards. It is clear from the beautifully written citations, word of mouth from the people that they have worked with and even what we have seen ourselves that both Lyn and Noelle are worthy representatives from Limerick. This year also sees the turn of St. Senans to receive the area award. Of course there is great work being carried out in every area. This has become so apparent to me on a personal level since I became P.R.O. The numbers of hardworking and dedicated volunteers around the county is exceptional and the vast and rapidly increasing numbers of competitors is astounding. This story is no different in St. Senans compromising of children from Shanagolden, Foynes and Robertstown and we wish them the best of luck this weekend.Sympathy
Limerick Community Games would like to express our deepest sympathy to the family of Teresa Cunningham who passed away last weekend. Teresa’s daughter Frances Kearns is currently Development Officer for Limerick City. May she rest in peace.Fixtures - Round 2

Area Awards
The area awards that were due to take place last Saturday the 21st November in Ballinasloe were cancelled due to severe flooding in the area. The awards have now been rescheduled to Saturday the 9th January at the same venue. Awards will be presented to Lyn Nolan (Volunteer Recognition), Noelle Nicholson (Youth) and St. Senans (area). Best of Luck to all concerned.Monaleen Choir
It all began last summer at the National Finals in Athlone, when Joe Kelly from Sligo invited a choir from Monaleen to participate in the Sligo. This was a huge honour for the choir as they were the only choir in the competition invited to take part. A group of about twenty eight between the ages of ten and nineteen headed for Sligo and described it as an incredible experience, the group bringing home a trophy and a prize of €200. It just shows there are endless amounts of opportunities available through Community Games. Well done to everyone involved.Reminders
The first round of the draughts and also U/15 soccer are on Saturday 5th December. Also the first round of the Boys Indoor soccer begins on Sunday 6th December. Best of luck to all competitors and let the games begin!

40th Anniversary Celebrations
On Saturday the 7th November 2009 at 8pm in the Rathkeale House Hotel a large crowd gathered to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Limerick Community Games. A superb evening was to unfold for the representatives who travelled from all parts of the city and county. The evening passed quickly with numerous awards, dinner, impressive speeches and quite a bit of reminiscing. Believe it or not one women remarked that she would have listened to the speeches for much longer as she thoroughly enjoyed the stories of old times, new times with a few hopes for the future included too. Agnes O’Dowd acted as M.C. for the night and did an excellent job. However the talking could not last forever and the night was finished off with some fun and dancing. We were honoured with the presence of John Quinn former Chairman and President of Community Games, the wife and daughter of the late John O’Donnell who was founder member of Limerick community games and also father of Liz O’Donnell T.D., John Loftus, recent winner of the World Title in 100m for people who have had a kidney transplant was in attendance with Seamus Hickey Limerick Hurler to name but a few.
Golden Vale Limerick Community Games have always been renowned for its vast Youth Involvement both at area, county and National level. Mick Bourke Deputy President of HSE Community Games commented that Limerick has one of the best Youth involvement in the country if not the best, a statement which must be looked on with immense pride. This year Rebecca Kearns from Our Lady of Lourdes and Noelle Nicholson from Kildimo/ Pallaskenry were both deserving nominees to receive the Youth Award. This year saw the turn of Noelle Nicholson and Joe O’Halloran read out a beautifully written citation giving an indication of the extent of Noelle’s commitment to community Games training teams in her own area and is an excellent role model to the local competitors, she herself taking part in the games since she was seven years old. Congratulations to Noelle on receiving the award!
The Volunteer Recognition Award was also presented on the night. The nominees being Margaret Murphy from Abbeyfeale, Michéal O’Brien from Ballybrown/ Clarina, Lyn Nolan from Kilcornan and Mary Phelan from Our Lady Of Lourdes. This year the award was presented to Lyn Nolan from Kilcornan who from the citation read by Phyl McCarthy verbalised the extent of Lyn’s dedication to her own area organising a long list of events and has worked tirelessly in improving her area. Also she has used many of her skills at provincial and national level co-ordinating Badminton. Thank you and well done Lyn!
That was not all Veronica Garry from St Kevins was presented with Area Secretary of the Year, Deirdre Shanahan from Croagh/ Kilfinny was awarded the P.R.O. Award of a small area award and Vera Fitzgerald from Rathkeale being given the large Area P.R.O of the Year. Congratulations! Also our Chairman Dan McCarthy presented a number of Awards to our friends from Kerry, Mick Bourke from Cork with John Dinnage and Anthony Fitzsimons from Limerick.
The greatly anticipated launch of the 40th Anniversary booklet also took place on the night. This book is outstanding with wonderful photos, memories of the past forty years and an account from each area. It is well worth buying as there will be hours upon hours spent reading observing and remembering the different events, people and fun! Copies are available from all area secretaries or John Dinnage 06964008
Therefore to conclude, the past forty years have seen thousands of children in Limerick being brought up around the wonderful organisation that is community Games. I would like to quote Anthony Fitzsimons from Saturday night by saying “Mol an óige agus tiocfaidh said.” Here is to another forty years of giving the young people of Limerick the help and encouragement through sport and cultural activities that they truly deserve.REMINDER: Don’t forget the u/18 and competitor awards being presented next Sunday 15th November in the Rathkeale Community Centre at 4pm! A buffet, presentations and disco will all take place. However it is really important to remember that Admission is by ticket only.
Also: Youth Committee AGM, Saturday 14th November at 4pm in Headquarters, Rathkeale. All Youth between the ages of 16 and 25 are welcome.

It is very simple to form an area within Community Games. Limerick is very well structured with 4 Development Officers namely Mary Corby West Limerick, Robert O'Dea East Limerick, Frances Kearns Limerick City and Bridget Kelly South Limerick. These Officers are dedicated to creating and assisting new areas in the county and the officers over the past number of years have been tremendously successful.
Contact details for each Officer is available from our county secretary Eleanor Fitzsimons @ 069 76226 or e-mail eleanor@fitzsimonsprinters.ie.How to create/register a New Area?
• Each New Area needs a committee setup to proceed. This requires the following personnel; Chairperson, Secretary, Treasurer, Development Officer.
• Once you have got these individuals in place, outline on a map
(Ordinance Survey Map) the exact boundary of the Area you wish to setup.
• Then contact your County Secretary and establish firstly that the Area you have is not or partly already affiliated to another Area nearby. An Area is a natural entity where people live (rural or suburban) and it is neither governed by county or parish boundaries but must have a total population under 6,000.
• The next step is to complete the Affiliation Form and submit to your County Secretary for acceptance by the County Executive Committee with the annual Registration Fee, which covers all members in your Area for Personal Accident & Public Liability Insurance.
• All new Areas are encouraged to take up four activities in the first year.
• All areas are requested to hold their AGMs over the next few weeks if not already done so.
• Our National organisation have readjusted the year end to December 31st 2009 so in order to be eligible to compete in early January one has to be affiliated by this year end.Dates to remember for 2009/2010

Spikeball
Spikeball is a new and exciting variation of Volleyball. There are 6 players on each team, 4 on the court and 2 subs. The beauty of this game is there is an automatic substitution every time the team rotates therefore giving each member of the team a chance to play. A vast amount of skills are picked up while playing the game and as always within Community Games the emphasis is on fun and participation making the game exciting and enjoyable. Due to considerable interest in Spikeball the Volleyball Association of Ireland has agreed to give two courses in the Limerick area. These will take place on the 17th November for West Limerick and on the 1st December for East Limerick. If you are interested please keep an eye on the Community Games notes over the coming weeks for more information.Youth News
The Annual General Meeting of the Limerick Community Games Youth Committee will take place on Saturday 14th November at 4pm in Headquarters, Rathkeale. The Youth Committee has gone from strength to strength in the past number of years and there is outstanding commitment to keeping the strength, vitality and energy towards Community Games within each member of the Youth. Therefore each area is kindly asked to promote the Youth Committee and encourage young people between the ages of 16 and 25 to become involved in this wonderful committee as it is such a valuable asset for Community Games in Limerick.01/11/09
40th Anniversary
Golden Vale Limerick Community Games comes of age having reached 40 years. It is hard to invisage that our parents (those of us in our late teens) actually competed in this wonderful organisation yet its founder Joe Connolly, a bus conductor in Dublin (that was when we had bus conductors) seeing many young people wandering around the open spaces kicking a ball etc without direction organised with a few friends a league for these young people and within two years the message was spreading far and wide.
Limerick joined the ranks in 1969 when a few volunteers namely Brother Perkins, President, John O’Donnel, Chairman, Dick Leonard, Vice chairman, Rian Glasgow, Secretary, Colum Mooney, Treasurer, Detective Garda Denis Harris Registrar, joined by family and friends grasped the idea of Community Games and the rest is history.
From my own part I have one vivid first memory of Golden Vale Community Games. It was when I reached the county Athletics finals in Bruff. I can’t recall the race in which I competed, the year, age group or whether I came in 10th place or 21st but it was the excitement of the parade, all the different flags, friendly rivalry, getting the chance to run in a big race and the honour of wearing the St. Senans singlet which has remained with me over the many years I have been in Community Games and will hopefully continue to do so into the future.
In Limerick when we think of 43 areas at present with an average of 250 children each it is very possible that we have in excess of 10k competing annually. That is just this year but looking bck over the 40 years we must have had half a million participants.
It is no wonder that on next Saturday night at 8.00p.m. in the Rathkeale House Hotel people will gather from all corners of Limerick City and County to celebrate this milestone and on this night also we will see a history of Community Games published. I believe there are many pages of history in word and picture covering all areas who have participated over the years. Golden Vale community games invites all to this celebration with tickets available through your local secretary or John Dinnage, Treasurer 069 64088.Golden Vale Limerick Community Games Sportsmanship Awards Nominees & Volunteer Recognition Award 2009

Website
Limerick Community Games has gained an exceptionally valuable asset over the past number of months that being the Limerick Community Games website. Damien O’Brien from Ballybrown/ Clarina must be acknowledged for all the time and work he has dedicated to creating this fantastic site to ensure everyone is kept up to date around the city and county. Each area can add information to the site and it will also be updated regularly with county news. A sincere Thank you to Damien and the website can be accessed at www.limerickcommunitygames.comYouth Weekend
Every year Youth from all around the country get together for a weekend organized by the National Youth Director. This year was no different and Limerick was represented by Antóin Fitzsimons and Paul Blackwell at Birr Outdoor Education Centre in Youth Director Kevin Doyle’s home county of Offaly. A great weekend was had by all as the weekend involved both Leadership training and activities organized by the centre. Anthony Fitzsimons carried out the Leadership course on Saturday morning which was deemed both beneficial and motivating in the development of children in sport by all those who took part. Saturday evening and Sunday was devoted to challenges of a rather different kind. The Youth took part in Archery, body surfing down rapids on the River Shannon, jumping a 10ft drop at a Lough gate nearby and they also spent some time absailing off a 50ft drop into the Shannon. This might have seemed like heart wrenching stuff but Antóin insists “everyone rose to the challenge, it was a great weekend”. If activities similar to this interest you the Youth Committee AGM will take place on Saturday November 14th at 4pm in Headquarters, Rathkeale. All youth between the ages of 16 and 25 are invited to attend.Area Notes
I would like to advise all area P.R.O.’s to please send all their notes directly to the papers either by email or the person in your area who takes care of the notes to ensure that they will appear in the papers. My main aim is to treat each area fairly therefore I feel that each area should carry out the same procedures each week. The P.R.O.’s in each area are doing a fantastic job and this is plain to see in all of the papers. However if there is anything you are not sure about or you’re new to the job like myself feel free to contact me at aine4mlimerick@hotmail.com
